background.
Born out of a one-night stand that happened during the crazy college parties where everyone got themselves drunk and with someone for the night, awkward mornings and then never meeting again.
This was the case for Yvette Sinclair, she had been at a party during the end of her final year at college and got with a male a year or so younger than her, not that it matter since the unspoken rule of never meeting again hung in the air. He made his way out the door of her dorm room and out of her life before she could even wake up after that night. She never asked for more than his name and major before the two of them fell into a heated night.
It wasn’t until two months into her first summer that she tried to find the mystery hookup again, she refused to go through an unwanted pregnancy on her own, but fate wasn’t too kind on her. She didn’t terminate the pregnancy, she had no choice but to give up her dreams and future for her son, moving back with her parents for support before getting fed up and moving out to live with a friend.
Her son grew up with his mother and ‘aunt’ in an ordinary environment, minus not being the most social butterfly throughout his younger years and displaying signs of social anxiety. As he got older, it only seemed to worsen. He avoided people more than usual, claiming he didn’t like the noise of being around others.
Jason hated being around others so much that it reached the point of him begging to be homeschooled.
Years later when he had reached his teen years, things started to worsen for him. He despised being outside, despised the very thought of being around others for long periods of time.
One day, his mother had taken him to a family sort of get together, an absolute nightmare for him. What with the screaming children, the crowds of people and the god awful loud music. Complete sensory overload. That night he had argued with his mother about dragging him to that torture, claiming he heard more voices than the obnoxiously loud guests that were there.
He remembered screaming, yelling, crying… and then silence. His mother had simply slumped in her seat, eyes like glass and body slowly going cold. Jason had reached over to shake his mother awake after the choking like noise she was making has ceased. He had been yelling at her to shut up and didn’t remember what
had come after.
He didn’t know what to do after that, simply called an emergency number after packing enough things to keep him on the road for a while. Opting for a more ‘homeless, keeping away from everyone’ sort of lifestyle. He could have easily found a bunch of people to latch on to, so he would be kept safe, but couldn’t bear the thought of getting attached.
It wasn’t long before someone tried to attack him and dropped dead, Jason had thought that the brute had a stroke or something along those lines, but it seemed that the loud crowd had decided to call him ‘one a them freaks with magic tricks and ugly mugs’. He didn’t know who these ‘freaks’ were or why he was categorized with them in the first place.
It only seemed to get worse though, as he kept hearing his mother’s voice out of nowhere,. He didn’t want to believe this at first but she had soon manifested before him in a form he wasn’t sure what to call. He could see her but see through her.. and part of him wondered if he was hallucinating to cope with the loss.
She started to tell him things while the two continued their journey, things that soon made him determined to find his father. Though, all he had was a mental image of a face from his mother’s memory to guide him and a name. He wasn’t sure how to find the man, and almost two decades after his mother last saw him…
He spent the majority of his time alone, listening to his mother as he went through his journey and doing his best to avoid people, he figured out why the called him freak and why he kept hearing things out of nowhere… some sort of power he didn’t know he had until now. Someone had mentioned the term mutant and it sounded rather fitting.. it was also more of a guide on his adventure but he didn’t quite know that just yet.
With a new power unlocked as he went on, it started to become more and more difficult To survive. During the hours he was awake, he talked to different spirits that.. couldn’t seem to move on. They slowly became sort of .. friends to him and helped him along the way. During the hours where he tried to sleep, however, things weren’t as easy. Restless spirits kept away from him when he was awake, he could just barely defend himself that way but still posed a danger. Though when resting, he was an easy target. The vengeful spirits hurt him, he’s not sure why but they seemed to enjoy it. This led to very little sleep on his end and many injuries he couldn’t treat.
He managed to meet other mutants along the way, and they guided him to some sort of mutant private school that sounded interesting enough to check out. A home perhaps?
So, he started the journey across the city there and lay low until he could find his father again.
His first day there, he got to meet the headmaster..
He didn’t need to ask his mother for confirmation, didn’t need to ask as the familiar features made it clear just who this man was, the man he had been searching for, for the past few months without knowing all too much about him. Jason had finally found his father.
This wasn’t a fantasy though, as his father only seemed to care for him for a few weeks at most. He had explained the situation to the man, from the moment his mother had passed up until that very moment.. and yet, he didn’t seem to be all that cared for. He was given shelter and a proper education, sure, but it didn’t feel like a home.
